40 Before 40

A little over a month ago I turned 35. Since that day I’ve been working on compiling my “40 before 40” list. It came to me as an idea when conversing with some friends online. I’ve seen lists like this around the Internet and I’ve been intrigued by what I would put on my list. As you can see it took me over a month to come up with the list.

Initially, I was just saying some things out loud – but I kept forgetting what I had said. Then I started a Note on my iPhone so wherever inspiration struck I could add another item to the list. I had some helpful input from Mr. Bubbinsky (hubby) and some friends, with their help I finished my iPhone list. However, the process didn’t feel complete. I absolutely HAD to write my list out on paper, in my Wonder Woman notebook, of course. While I was writing my list out I was able to fine tune it a bit more and now I present you with my complete list of “40 before 40.” I have until June 18, 2017, exactly 1793 days until my 40th birthday and to complete this list.

  1. Plant an herb & vegetable garden and enjoy the food from it. In other words, don’t kill the garden.
  2. Attend BlogHer and other conferences.
  3. Renew wedding vows with Mr. Bubbinsky.
  4. Take a photography class.
  5. Knit a sweater for myself.
  6. Take a cooking class.
  7. Take a baking class.
  8. Dance again.
  9. Walk long distance endurance events working up: 5K, 10K, 1/2 marathon, full marathon – Nike Women’s in San Francisco.
  10. Take yoga classes.
  11. Write a manuscript for a book.
  12. Travel out of the country.
  13. Travel out of California to a state that is not Nevada.
  14. Make exercise a regular part of my life, it’s an investment in being around for hubby and the kids.
  15. Raise money for an important cause yearly by participating in an event, i.e. Arthritis Walk for Arthritis Foundation, Northern California Chapter.
  16. Be debt free.
  17. Use coupons regularly.
  18. Learn to swim – for reals this time.
  19. Shop at the Farmer’s Market regularly.
  20. Knit the Dr. Who scarf.
  21. Go on a retreat.
  22. Walk across the Golden Gate Bridge, again.
  23. Teach someone something I love.
  24. Enroll in school every term to learn something, anything.
  25. Stick to my boundaries, especially when saying no.
  26. Travel somewhere by train.
  27. Donate blood.
  28. Spend a weekend away with Mr. Bubbinsky each year.
  29. Write at least 1,000 posts on this blog.
  30. Get to and maintain a healthy weight for my height.
  31. Establish a regular date night with Mr. Bubbinsky.
  32. Go to at least one SF Giants baseball game each season.
  33. Every year read more books than the previous year.
  34. Test drive a car with a HEMI in it.
  35. Indoor rock climbing.
  36. Learn a musical instrument proficiently.
  37. Get a new tattoo.
  38. Rediscover my passion.
  39. Go to live performances including music and theater.
  40. Make every day better than the day before. It’s been my mantra as a mom and I will continue to do this for my kids, my husband and mostly myself in some way, shape or form.

And of course, I’ll write my “50 before 50” list.

So as a thank you for your your readership I would like to shower you with gifts on this the day of my 200th post.

I will give away 4 “gift packs” – each one includes a paperback copy of The Lucky One by Nicholas Sparks. I received these as part of hosting a House Party for the release of the movie, they sent 14 copies of the book and there were not 14 of us at the party, so I’m going to share the wealth with you. If you already have the book or would prefer not to have it, let me know and it can be it’s own standalone prize for more gift receivers. Each “gift pack” also includes zippered bags hand made my me. The bags are different sizes and are all lined with a coordinating print.

Wallet sized and make-up/pencil pouch sized bags with dog-themed print. – Gift Pack 1

Wallet sized and make-up/pencil pouch sized with chili pepper themed print – Gift Pack 2

Large sized bag and make-up/pencil pouch sized bags with dog-themed fabric. – Gift Pack 3

One large sized bag with paw print themed fabric. – Gift pack 4

Now that you’ve seen the list and seen the gifts, here’s what you need to do: Leave a comment sharing something on your bucket list, let me know which gift pack you’d like (they’re numbered in the caption), and let me know if you want the book. I’ll draw names for the winners. Easy Peezy Lemon Squeezy!

UPDATE: We have winners! I wrote names/preferences on post-its, folded them up and had Mr. Snugglebunny pull them out of a “hat”.

He picked: Sara Ford, Leah Sawkins, Robyn, Audrey Martin, and Palmetto Queen. One person didn’t want a book allowing for an extra prize to be awarded. Congratulations ladies!

Great post! I think I want to make a 35 before 35 list. Thanks for the inspiration!

I will be putting donate blood on my list too. I want to and haven’t had the opportunity to yet.

I love prize 1! And would love to read the book!!

Thanks for the giveaway! You can totally accomplish your list! Everything is doable!

    • SimplyGabriela

Thanks for your encouragement Robyn! I look forward to reading your list. I tried to make sure I put things that were doable but still challenging on the list. Of course, after I published I thought of more.

  • palmettoqueen

I love this! Your list is so inspiring! I used to give blood every chance, and would like to do this again. (One more reason for me to get my health in check) My 30 before 30 List is really similar to yours, I also want to finish my book! Thank you for sharing your list! I would love to read that book!

    • SimplyGabriela

Thanks Cari! I’ll have to check out your list. Donating blood is not necessarily so difficult for me, I just have to time it around my medications but it’s one of those things that I’ve said I want to do for a long time and just haven’t gotten around to it.

  • Leah Sawkins

Good for you Gaby! :O) I have The Lucky One so i’m not going in the draw, I love the fabric on gp4 though! Give blood & getting a new tattoo are definitely on my list though :O)

  • Audrey Martin

Gaby I have been working on my bucket list as I recently was given a possible “expiration date” and the two things I have been researching cost on are riding in a race car on a NASCAR track, and actually going to a race and meeting my favorite driver. I wish you success on your list. Gift 4

nice list, i’ve been meaning to make a list for myself but all i’ve got so far are random things that i know i should do sometime[like, learning to do 50 push-ups in a row! or, or finally riding goliath at six flags, or maybe even figuring out how to cure my black thumb and learn how to care for a plant properly..the unwritten list goes on.]
gift pack 3 is my favorite, though i already have a copy of that book xD

  • Debbie Hallamek

Mine is to get up the courage to get a tattoo too. I’ve even got it picked out, a ball of yarn. I would love the book and the package #4. thanks!

  • Sara Ford

Finish school!!! I would love to before kids finished High school at least lol. Sadly don’t have much left to do to get my associates at least. Love pack 1.

  • Angie

I so want to help you with your #3!!! As a parent of a child who may be transfusion dependent someday I hope you and all those who have commented that they want to donate blood. It’s literally the gift of life and isn’t just for surgeries or accident victims…but you know that. I would personally like to learn to deal with stress in a better manner. I would also like to take yoga classes. I want to yell less as a mom, I hate doing it and it’s not productive but it’s in my DNA.

    • SimplyGabriela

Thanks Angie! I will definitely accept your help for #3. I just have to plan my donations around my medication and I’m good to go on the blood donations. I also need to learn to deal with stress in a better manner, I’m hoping some of the things on my list will help me to do that. Maybe a 35 before 35 list to get you started?

  • Yfg70

Uh, I did not know you were compiling a list. :-( I was thinking perhaps, visiting at least 5 National parks & 2 momuments. I started doing that but then the recession & two kids hit -never made it. Now I’ll be 42 with 2 small kids & don’t want to start one all over again. Best of LUCK!!!
